about the Exhibition
Robert creates two metaphors for Sissy Circus: as a social metaphor, where members of a minority enjoy themselves by exposing aspects of their identity which previously let to their social exclusion; as a metaphor of the exhibition in which it is shown. Instead of a tent, we are inside a gallery, and the spectacle here is the art. Robert links the two metaphors so to provide a chance for the minority group to express their living and uniqueness to the world; and in return the world can accept the minority to the society. Moreover, Robert is trying to reinterpret the drastic phenomenon of the world with alternative aspects so that people are more independent on perceiving the world.
To look at Robert Estermann’s artworks, try to go beyond the simple black and white, and beyond exclusion. This requires often some mindful observation of the works. He makes use of simple lines instead of symbols to express his emotion to the world, as well as reflecting the various situations of the society, the people and their feelings.
Robert 的藝術風格可以用簡約而優雅來形容，在這個展覽中．他利用線條和黑白兩色，加上簡約主義，創造了Sissy Circus 一畫。
研讀哲學的Robert希望藉著是次展覽帶出社會思想極端的現象，世事往往不一定有絕對的答案，例如不美，不等於醜、不好，就不一定是壞等極端的答案，當觀眾探究他的藝術品時，應自己去慢慢領會每件藝術品的意思，找出答案。Robert 把虛擬的馬戲團比喻少數民族的聚居地，藝術品則比喻為少數民族，希望馬戲團能讓參觀展覽的觀眾，感受到少數民族的存在和獨特性，從而令少數民族獲得更多人的認同，帶給少數民族曙光和歡樂。
細味Robert Estermann的作品時，要試圖去超脫黑和白的框架及其他的觀賞限制。要超脫限制，必先要深入觀察作品，領略情感的精髓；因此Estermann的作品都以線條取替符號，於線條間滲透出絲絲的情感。Estermann 的作品是現實中各種各樣的倒影，反映人的外在以及內心，關係千絲萬縷、環環相扣的。
about Rober Estermann
Robert Estermann was born in 1970 and grew up in a small village in the Swiss Alps. Since his childhood, he did drawing, writing, and a form of impromptu theatre he invented for himself. Lines always fascinated him in particular, because they are simple yet powerful, and they play a central role in his work till today.
After middle school, Estermann went directly to Paris, to study philosophy and French literature at the Sorbonne and passed a master degree at the National Academy of Fine Arts in Paris. He worked and lived for extended periods of time in the Netherlands, in South Korea and in the United States where he participated in artist in residence programs and exchanges.
Since 2008 he also works as a lecturer for "art and architecture" at the department for architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, where he also has his art studio.
Since more than 10 years, his work is shown in exhibitions throughout Europe, and several times in Korea, and has gained international recognition since. Amongst other distinctions, he received three times the "Swiss Art Award". His work is represented by Galerie du Jour Agnes b. in Paris, where his work has been extensively shown since 1999, as well as by Hilfiker Kunstprojekte in Switzerland, and by Kim Kim Gallery in Korea.
Robert Estermann 於1970 年出生，於瑞士阿爾卑斯山下的一條小村莊成長。從小開始， Estermann己喜歡畫畫，寫作和參與自己創作的即興劇場。自小便鍾情簡單又充滿能量的線條，而線條往往扮演他作品的主角。
中學以後，Estermann到巴黎索邦大學研讀哲學和法國文學，並於巴黎國家美術學院獲得碩士學位。他曾到不同的地方居住及工作，荷蘭，南韓和美國 (參與藝術家駐場計劃和藝術交流活動) 等。
2008 年起，他更擔任於蘇黎世的瑞士聯邦理工學院建築學系講師，講解「藝術與建築」，同時於蘇黎世成立自己的藝術工作室。
在這10 年間，他的作品漸漸獲得國際的認同，開始受到廣泛注意，並滲透歐洲各地，更多次在韓國展出；再者，他己三次獲得「瑞士藝術獎」的榮譽。Estermann 的作品曾於各地展出：有巴黎的Galerie du Jour, Agnès b.，瑞士的Hilfiker Kunstprojekte 及韓國的Kim Kim Gallery。
